09.16.10 GEICO’S BRANDED MOBILE CONTENT POWERED BY MYXER IS A HIT WITH CONSUMERS, NOTCHING OVER 350,000 DOWNLOADS IN 60 DAYS

Campaign demonstrates the popularity and power of branded mobile content from Myxer to drive engagement and action

Miami, FL & Chevy Chase, MD (September 16, 2010) - Myxer, a mobile technology company that operates the seventh largest U.S. mobile web site,* and GEICO, the third largest private passenger auto insurer in the U.S., today announced impressive results following the first two months of a new branded mobile content campaign.

Under the partnership, Myxer created custom web and mobile web storefronts for a wide range of GEICO ringtones, including those featured in commercials as well as sound bites of the popular Gecko character. Overall, more than 350,000 downloads of GEICO mobile entertainment content were recorded in the first 60 days of the new campaign, leading to a major spike in traffic to the storefronts.

“One of the key objectives of the campaign is to drive both downloads and sharing of the content, and we were able to achieve this by seamlessly integrating with Facebook, Twitter and our own “send to friend” feature,” said Myxer Founder and CEO Myk Willis.

“Given Myxer’s strong audience reach and expertise in mobile marketing and content delivery, they’ve been a great partner for us,” said Ted Ward, vice president of marketing at GEICO. “We look forward to continuing our work with Myxer to give consumers access to highly engaging content which they can enjoy and share with others.”

All of the sharing features, for each individual item, are available from both the web and directly from a user’s phone. In addition, the campaign leveraged the custom SMS Keyword “GEICO” (Text “GEICO” to 69937) to deliver a direct link to the custom GEICO mobile content storefront on Myxer. In all, 28 pieces of mobile content were created and are featured at myxer.com/geico on the web and m.myxer.com/geico on the mobile web.

“GEICO is a brand with great personality and a wide range of fun, recognizable content, making them a natural partner for our unique branded mobile content offerings,” continued Willis. “Our large audience and custom branded delivery path made it easy for GEICO fans to show their brand affinity and find their way to geico.com on the web and mobile.”

As a testament to its successful implementation and execution, Myxer’s GEICO campaign has been named as a MOBI Awards finalist in the category of Best Mobile Branding Campaign

Myxer’s content has been downloaded by over 38 million unique users. The company maintains a strong commitment to helping advertisers, marketers, wireless carriers and content publishers with innovative products and services to deliver original content to mobile phones.

09.09.10 Myxer’s BoomBox ‘Check-In’ Report Shows Only 11% of Respondents Use Location-Based Social Networks, with MyTown Dominating FourSquare and Gowalla

Miami, FL (September 9, 2010) – Although the future indeed looks bright for location-based social networks, a new survey of over 1,500 Myxer users in the U.S. concludes it might not be as mainstream as it’s perceived. As detailed in the latest Myxer BoomBox report on location-based social networks, only 11% of respondents claim to use them, with leading services differing greatly from those that get the most publicity.

According to Myxer’s BoomBox ‘check-in’ report, of the 11% of respondents that do use location-based services, consumers heavily favored Booyah Networks’ MyTown, which claimed 56% of those polled, while Loopt came in second place at 12%. Surprisingly, two of the more ‘popular’ services, Gowalla and Foursquare, trailed far behind MyTown, only capturing 8% respectively.

The study also revealed some surprising trends as they relate to preferences by those who use these services. 77% of respondents said they check into their network at home, more often than checking in from other venues.

Hurdles to adoption

For those who don’t use the services, only 14% claimed privacy as the reason, while 56% claimed lack of interest, and nearly a quarter (23%) reported that their phone doesn’t have the ability.

Of the 11% who responded yes to using these networks, they appear to be increasingly active, with 73% citing an increase in their use of these services and only 27% reporting a decrease. And in terms of frequency, 31% said they check in at least once a day, and 26% said they check-in every hour, giving hope to a potential of high-engagement from a marketing perspective.

Additionally, among those polled who do use location-based social networks, 55% said that they have used location based social networks to attend a venue and of those who attended venues, music events were most popular at 36%, followed by Restaurants at 28% and Bar/Clubs at 19%.

“Our check-in report demonstrates that location-based social networks are growing but not mainstream yet,” said Myk Willis, CEO of Myxer. “Suprisingly Booyah’s MyTown seems to have the early lead in the space and most consumers check-in at home. We believe the success of such services hinges on the passive gaming element which may supercede true online-to-offline event discovery.”

Since 2005 Myxer has cataloged various data points: age, gender, geographic location, phone model, manufacturer, carrier, as well as the operating system of each handset that initiated a download from its delivery platform that now supports more than seven million monthly unique visitors downloading over 80 million content items from Myxer each month. For this month’s report, Myxer used PollDaddy, an online polling and survey tool, which gathered responses from more than 1,500 Myxer users.

05.07.10 Females Download More than Twice as Much Mobile Content than Males, BoomBox Study Shows

Females Continue Dominance on Mobile, Account for 67% of Downloads Across Myxer Platform for the Month of April

Miami, FL (May 7, 2010) – Female mobile users unite! In the quest to find out who is the most prolific mobile content consumer between the two sexes, females win by a landslide, according to Myxer’s latest BoomBox report for the month of April. In honor of Mother’s Day, Myxer – a mobile community of more than 34 million users - has taken a deep dive into how female consumption habits compare to males, providing fresh insights on unique data broken down by new users, smartphone concentration, content downloads and wireless carriers.

According to the study, for the month of April women downloaded twice the amount of mobile entertainment content as men, representative of 4.5 million downloads, or 67% of total content downloads, compared to 2.2 million downloads for men. This large disparity in downloads is due to two factors; there are roughly 1.7 times as many females as males downloading content from Myxer on a monthly basis, and each female that visits downloads 17% more content than the average male.

Android vs. iPhone: Average Download by Gender

Taking a look at the number of downloads by gender on Android and iPhones, females far surpass males again. The average female using an Android device downloaded 7.6 pieces of content for the month of April, while the average male visiting Myxer on an Android device only downloaded 6.0 items during that time, or 21% less than the average female. This is a big contrast to iPhone handsets where females only downloaded 6% more than males, or 3.0 items compared to 2.8 items respectively.

Smartphone Breakdown by Gender

When considering adoption of new smartphones, Myxer finds that females choose BlackBerry more often (49%) than males (43%). Conversely, males use Android devices more frequently than females, with 23% of them choosing the Android platform vs. 18% of females. There are no significant differences in adoption of the other smartphone platforms.

Gender Breakdown by Wireless Carrier

In terms of wireless carriers, females also held the majority on every network for the month of April. T-Mobile was the most popular among female users (62%) while Nextel was the least popular among females (52%) and the most evenly split of all the carriers. MetroPCS, Sprint, Cricket, Alltell, and US Cellular were the second most popular among females with a 61% share, followed by Virgin Mobile (60%), Verizon (59%), AT&T (58%) and Boost Mobile at 54%.

“Looking at the gender breakdown across the more than 34 million users on Myxer’s platform, it’s apparent that female users are the ones driving mobile content downloads,” said Myk Willis, CEO of Myxer. “This information paints a powerful picture of today’s evolving mobile landscape, and with Mother’s Day right around the corner, our latest BoomBox report shows developing trends that marketers and advertisers can use when fine-tuning their mobile business strategies.”

As broken down by gender, women were surprisingly dominant across all BlackBerry devices, with the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 having the largest concentration of female users at 70%, and the BlackBerry Storm 9530 having the highest concentration of male users at 46%.

Since 2005 Myxer has cataloged various data points: age, gender, geographic location, phone model, manufacturer, carrier, as well as the operating system of each handset that initiated a download from its delivery platform that now supports more than seven million monthly unique visitors downloading over 90 million content items from Myxer each month.

04.07.10 BlackBerry Continues Dominance Across U.S., According to BoomBox, Myxer’s Monthly Report on Mobile Entertainment Trends

RIM Operating Platform Bigger than Android and iPhone Combined

Miami, FL (April 7th, 2010) – While iPhone and Android are quick to grab much of the headlines these days, RIM has shown impressive results and rapid growth, according to Myxer’s latest report, BoomBox. For this month’s report, Myxer takes a hard look at year–over-year growth across smartphone platforms, and provides a breakdown of RIM data as it compares to the overall Myxer audience of more than 33 million users.

According to the study, RIM continues to far outpace Windows, Palm, webOS, Android, iPhone and Symbian based on mobile visits, growing from a 58% market share in March2009 to a 63% share in March 2010. Of the other operating systems, Android comes in second, more than doubling over the same time period from 7% to 17%, while iPhone makes a modest jump to 4%, up from 2% from the previous year. Symbian and webOS occupy the smallest percentage of market share with less than 2% combined, while Windows Mobile was the biggest loser moving from 21% in 2009 down to 10% in 2010.

Interestingly, the same holds true when comparing total downloads for the month of March 2010, where BlackBerry accounted for a whopping 72% of the 22 million smartphone content downloads, followed by Android at 14% and Windows Mobile at 7%. The others did not fare as well, with iPhone only grabbing a 2% share, Symbian a 3% share and webOS and Palm only representing 1% of smartphone downloads.

RIM vs. iPhone & Android: Regional Breakdown

Looking at the regional breakdowns of the most popular smartphone operating systems, RIM also emerges as the clear leader. Across all U.S. states RIM is dominant in 44 of them, even when you combine Android and iPhone users for each state. BlackBerry only loses to the iPhone and Android in Alaska, Hawaii, Kentucky, and Louisiana, with Nevada and Texas representative of ‘swing states’, or less than a 10% differential in users.

RIM Handset Breakdown by Downloads and Gender

In terms of BlackBerry downloads on Myxer, the BlackBerry Curve 8330 was the most widely used by far, accounting for roughly 4.8 million of the total 22 million of the smartphone downloads for March 2010. The Blackberry Curve 8320 represented the lowest number of downloads with only 384,190.

As broken down by gender, women were surprisingly dominant across all BlackBerry devices, with the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 having the largest concentration of female users at 70%, and the BlackBerry Storm 9530 having the highest concentration of male users at 46%.

“With BlackBerry users downloading 16 million pieces of mobile content a month and growing, Myxer represents one of the largest communities of RIM users in the world,” said Myk Willis, CEO of Myxer. “Despite what you may hear or read about in the press, RIM’s audience still dominates across the U.S., and far surpasses iPhone and Android in a number of important categories. We continue to be very impressed by RIM’s growth, and remain confident that it will continue to be a preferred platform of choice by a wide cross section of mobile content consumers.”
