There aren’t many options for poverty stricken youths in New Orleans these days and there were even less during the 1990’s. Those were the years the nation’s ‘Big Easy’ was given its gruesome Murder Capitol title.
Since its conception, New Orleans’ cajun-spiced melting pot has always overflowed with talented artist, musicians, poets and just about any other individuals who’ve mastered there mediums. And like it has always done, during the 1990’s, art was imitating life. Local celebrities like Mystical, The Hot Boys, and the late Soulja Slim detailed the the nooks and crannies of life in the hood. They gave vivid descriptions, sort of like audio time capsules, of what it was like to grow up in New Orleans. Natives of New Orleans identified with they’re bars and hooks and their lyrics especially hit home with a 7 year old female by the name of Na’Tee.
