Like Godzilla lying in suspended animation under some desolate arctic ice flow, American thrash metal kept a low profile for the second half of the Nineties and the first few years of the new century, biding its time while nu-metal enjoyed its 15 minutes in the spotlight. But the last few years have seen thrash return with a vengeance, spearheaded by a new generation of bands like Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Chimaira, and, most recently, Malachi. Dave Mustaine: "Thrash endures because we're the disenfranchised youth of America, and somebody has to play the music that will soothe the savage beast in all of us."
